Embossing

Embossing is a card manufacturing process where data is imprinted on a payment card in the form of raised characters. This traditional method was primarily used to facilitate the physical transfer of card information onto paper during a transaction. The raised characters, which typically include the cardholder's name, card number, and expiration date, allow for the creation of a carbon copy imprint of the card details when used with a manual credit card imprinter.

This technique was especially common before the widespread adoption of electronic data capture technologies. In contemporary settings, while the use of embossing has decreased due to the rise of electronic payment systems and chip technology, it remains in use for its aesthetic appeal and for providing a tactile element that can be useful for visually impaired individuals.

The embossed information on credit and debit cards continues to serve a secondary role, providing a physical method of capturing card details in situations where digital systems may fail or are unavailable.
