PTS (PIN Transaction Security)

PTS, or PIN Transaction Security, refers to a set of modular evaluation requirements managed by the PCI Security Standards Council. These requirements are specifically designed for Point of Interaction (POI) terminals where Personal Identification Number (PIN) acceptance is involved. The aim of PTS standards is to ensure that these devices meet rigorous security requirements to protect cardholder data during transactions.

The PTS standards cover various aspects of security including but not limited to the physical security of the terminals, the security of the PIN entry devices, and the protection of the encrypted PIN and other sensitive data processed by the terminals. The standards are modular, meaning that device vendors can choose to evaluate their products against specific modules that are relevant to the features and functions of their devices.

Key aspects of the PTS standards include:

Manufacturers of POI terminals are encouraged to comply with PTS standards to ensure their devices provide the necessary security measures to prevent data breaches and fraud. Compliance with these standards is critical for maintaining the trust of card issuers, merchants, and cardholders.
