SAFE (System to Avoid Fraud Effectively)
SAFE, or System to Avoid Fraud Effectively, is an anti-fraud initiative by Mastercard designed to combat and manage fraud on its network. This system mandates that participating banks meticulously document any claims of fraud reported by cardholders concerning transactions made with Mastercard debit and credit cards.
Under this initiative, once a fraud claim is reported, banks are required to compile and send a SAFE report to Mastercard. This report details each fraud claim, including information about the transaction, the nature of the alleged fraud, and any other relevant data. Mastercard utilizes these reports to analyze and identify patterns or trends in fraudulent activities, which can help pinpoint vulnerabilities within specific banks, merchants, or transaction types.
The collected data plays a crucial role in Mastercard’s broader efforts to enhance the security of its payment network. By identifying and understanding how fraud occurs, Mastercard can develop more effective strategies to prevent future incidents. This includes informing and adjusting security measures, providing targeted guidance to problem banks or merchants, and shaping policies that strengthen the overall integrity of the payments ecosystem.
SAFE is akin to Visa's TC40 data collection initiative, which serves a similar purpose in documenting and analyzing fraud claims to protect cardholders and reduce fraud on the Visa network. Both systems reflect the payment industry's ongoing commitment to improving security measures and maintaining trust in electronic transactions.
