Visa Merchant Purchase Inquiry (VMPI)

Visa Merchant Purchase Inquiry (VMPI) was an initiative developed by Visa to enhance the resolution process for disputes and reduce unnecessary chargebacks. The system enabled participating merchants to provide additional transaction details to issuers automatically upon request. This feature was particularly useful in instances where a cardholder did not recognize a transaction on their statement.

The primary goal of VMPI was to jog the memory of forgetful customers by supplying more information about their purchases, thus potentially confirming the legitimacy of a transaction. Additionally, the system aimed to dissuade potential fraudsters by demonstrating that detailed transaction records were accessible and could be easily shared with issuers.

However, following Visa's acquisition of Verifi, a company specializing in payment protection and management solutions, VMPI was integrated into Verifi's Order Insight system. This merger expanded the capabilities of the original VMPI system by incorporating Verifi's technology, which continued to fulfill the role of VMPI by providing a comprehensive view of transaction details to both issuers and cardholders. Order Insight aims to improve customer satisfaction and reduce friction in the dispute resolution process by enhancing transparency and communication between all parties involved. This transition reflects Visa's ongoing commitment to utilizing advanced technologies to improve security and efficiency in payment systems.
